PearPC Client OS as primary OS in a pc

Postby GUEST(Nurv) » Wed Jul 14, 2004 2:35 pm

This ideia strike me last night.

What if we use a linux kernel very simple, loading only the require things and then open a X process with pearpc running above it, giving the entire system to macos... with a strong JITC PPC -> IA-32 translation , Also with the floating point unit problem resovled, maybe it would be possible to have a rapid system. by my calcs a 2000mhz would run nicely

I have lots of time during summer. If some one wants to help me reply here that i drop of my e-mail.

thanks

Yeah, this idea has been floating around for a while, and I'd be interested in helping. (I think I could...) However the catch is we can't fit anything worth running in PPC on 1 CD, let alone in memory.

Yep, this would definitely work, but it would have to be on a dvd or on a sepearate HD partition. On boot we'd open PearPC... I'm in on the project. I guess we could call it "PearPC Standalone". I think we only need a few things:

2.6 Kernel w/ network and sound drivers
X-Window System
GLibC
PearPC starting on boot
OS 10.3 on an HD image
a cd drive running at /dev/cdrom

My email is voidasnull at hotmail d o t com.

Yup. Its correct. We would need that same code but by now we need to understand what parts of the kernel we need to throw away. Thats the first part. Second what i think is install in a disk. To do that we have to realize if PearPC allow RAW access to disk. Can any one test that?

Third. Any one understand X.Org code??

Last but not least can any one set up a sourceforge page for the project??

Thanks

Its possible, but linux is very well documented. I think it would be very hard for us to understand Darwin that linux.

Plus, if you could make it work in linux you can make it work in Darwin...

Well, Thats Possible..How about copyright laws and other laws ?

Let's discuss this stuff only in this post, since it'll be very hard to track dev otherwise. I'll set us up with a seperate site on http://de.pearpc.net/standalone...

Regarding the Kernel I'd say we throw all the drivers out that we don't need (sound as long as it's unsupported, modem, et cetera). We should basically only leave the GLibC and whatever starts in Terminal Mode (sh, x-window, su, grep, ls).

Let's first look for a lean mean fighting machine. I suggest using a minimal fedora core install, where we select the packages ourselves. That way we have a fairly good base to work on. Otherwise we'd have to go through a lot of work to build us an own distro. You'll find some good resources on the kernel at www.kernel.org...

Regarding copyright we shouldn't have a problem, since we only use programs dristroed under GPL by others. Of course we cannot include OS 10 in the linux distributions Very Happy

I was actually thinking an older distribution of RedHat, but I'd be perfectly comfotable doing this on Fedora too. I would not do this on Core 2 though.
