You can get a Mini Mandrakelinux install CD, but I doubt it has KDE or Gnome.

EDIT: Try Ubuntu... It has Gnome, but not KDE. It supports PowerPC too. Or perhaps Debian. With Debian, you can download a mini CD for x86 or PowerPC, then install the rest over the internet.

Do you really need KDE or GNOME?

If you do the "minimal installation with X" of Mandrake 9.1 then you can fit everything in 300MB partition (or slightly larger, I don't remember exactly). I think it comes with
Icewm

If you install KDE or Gnome, you will need about 1GB (or slightly less).

Slackwares complete install is 4gb or so and comes on 2cds... Sort of advanced but not too much trouble if you have people to ask.

Or, you could use a distro with Xfce. Xfce looks good, but only takes about 50 MB.

If you ever have an old computer that you want to use Linux on, Xfce is the best choice. My system with 64MB RAM and 266Mz Cyrix MII runs fine with Xfce.

@trygvebw: Where can I get Kubuntu?

Prasys... why the need for small? You can slim down any distro to your liking.

What's the specs of the machine(s) your aiming this for?

Knoppix is pretty small, lightweight (IMO) and comes with KDE. Only a little under 700MB for the download and will give you a chance to play around before you decide to install it...

If you want to avoid bloat... avoid Mandrake, FC, Slack (sorry Guru) and Suse.

When it comes to PPC Linux there is only one real choice (IMO) Yellow Dog.

I use knoppix for all my Linux needs. I have a 8gb FAT32 partition on my PC where I can save any more serious work I'm doing in Linux. Knoppix is basically debian, and deb comes really slim if you do a network install.
