Why is an old Mac game in a DMG archive?

Postby heat84 » Thu Jul 21, 2005 4:34 am

I downloaded Myst 1 via BT, which for some inexplicable reason was in a DMG archive. I managed to exract the files from the archive and copy them to my Mac. But when I goto play it, it says to insert the Myst CD-ROM. How did the person who put Myst in a DMG expect people to be able to play it? Does any one know how to play it w/o a cd-rom? I'm pretty sure there were no crackers around back in '93 to make a no cd crack for it Laughing. Crying or Very sad

Or is there a way to burn mac files to a cd on a pc without the files being in an image? Or is there any mac emulator that will allow you to burn cds in what ever Mac OS it emulates using whatever burning software or the OS'es own burning software? Or is there any way to use a PC's burner over a network on a Mac? Nero can do that on a PC(at least I assume it does since it gives you the option to use multiple burners and I assume the other burners would be on other PC's that are networked with the PC that Nero is installed on).

You shouldn't use a stolen / downloaded version of the game...

but speaking of DMG files in general: They are OS X disc images.
You can double click them and OS X will mount them as a CDRom..

If you really want to burn to disc you could try dmg2iso from http://vu1tur.eu.org/tools/. I haven't actually tried it myself but it's available as both a perl script and win32 exe so you can run it on windows or the mac. Then just burn the iso with nero.

I finally got it working and if I wasn't such a Mac Newbie I would've got it working along time ago. I converted the DMG to DVD/CD master image (not exactly sure what that is but it sounded good) in OSX and then extrscted the CDR image from the HD image with TransMac then burned it with TransMac.

While the image was being converted it was saying cheksumming and then converting Toast 4.1.1 Partition . Is it possilble that Toast makes non-standard DMG's which caused DMGtoISO, DiskCopy 6.5b11, and DMG Mechanic not oto be able to do anything with this one? Thats just a wild guess, I've never even used Toast before.

I give up why isn't bold working.
