PearPC on unreleased Windows 7

Postby symbolic X » Sat Dec 27, 2008 12:50 am

Yesterday, I installed Windows 7. Of course, it was an unreleased version. It's around the Beta stage, if not, it's getting close. But the whole process was clean-install because my hardware couldn't roll with this OS as an upgrade.

After a clean install, already it has managed to recognize some of my hardware off my notebook, including my video card. I am still waiting for Microsoft to release a little support for my Conexant AC-Link Audio card but everything else is fine - even my internet and networking!

Now introducing something you all have never seen before. PearPC 0.5 (redscorp-release-20080329.1) running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 on Windows 7!

Senior Vice President Bill Veghte stated that Windows 7 will not have the kind of compatibility issues with Vista that Vista has with previous versions. Speaking about Windows 7 on 16 October 2008, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed compatibility between Vista and Windows 7. Ballmer also confirmed the relationship between Vista and Windows 7, indicating that Windows 7 will be an improved version of Vista.

Couple things I need to point out...
  • I'm surprised that we haven't had another screenshot of PearPC in 10 months.
  • Installing Windows 7 as it stands is a pain in the rear because simple upgrading out of XP or Vista doesn't work. It takes a clean install.
  • Getting some of my notebook hardware to run with Windows 7 was possible but totally uneasy. I had to go to http://www.hp.com and install only the drivers that would go with Vista, and those same drivers were able to run with Windows 7.

Windows 7 in general, too bad it's in beta (if not, they're getting pretty close), has not slowed down as much as Vista did. It doesn't seem to be a resource hog here. Genuine activation was fine. Now despite this OS running pretty smooth, there are no available up-to-date drivers for my AMD Sempron so I'll have to watch that carefully as it can power my computer off without my consent due to overheating! A driver for an AMD Sempron chip runs its "mobile technology" feature (like Intel Centrino) in which it can keep Windows alive despite unbearable heat.
