Mac OS X86 is illegal, unless used on a Intel Mac supplied from an authorized Apple dealer, end of story

Well we haven't ever run into any legal issues with Apple, whereas the OSX86 project has. See the topic Is "PearPC illegal?"

They probably realise that if anything PearPC helps them, as it's enough to give people a taste of Mac OS X, but unlike Mac OS x86 (if there was little enforcement of the Mac-only policy) is not enough for them to use it instead of buying a Mac as it's a bit slow/unreliable/can't be dual-booted.

Same goes for the strategy they've taken with OS x86 really - they know it's impossible to stop it being used on a generic PC, but the hassle of doing so (the cracks being broken with every update, having to hack the install etc.) is enough to stop it being used as an alternative to buying a Mac, while being enough to give people a taste of OS X.

Having used OS X on both PearPC and VMware, but never on a real Mac as the only Macs I have are really old ones that I've been given for free, I would actually consider a Mac if I was looking for a new computer (as long as it could dual-boot Windows for games), but I probably wouldn't have realised how good OS X is without having experienced it.

The OSx86 project got in trouble because they were distributing copyrighted material (patched files). MacOS x86 requires that you pirate a copy of MacOS, as Intel binaries are not yet sold separately from an Intel iMac or MacBook. PearPC uses a real, paid copy of MacOS.

I belive in most cases the Pearpc - Macosx -copys are not paid. The only difference is, you need no Patch to run it, because PPC has an Apple-like firmware

Well we sure expect them to be paid for. Remember, we don't tolerate piracy.

Either that, or a legit disk that the PearPC user has for their own Mac, or has borrowed from someone with a Mac, is used, which is surely also technically illegal, as usually you're only allowed to install software once at any one time (or is it OK to install 2 copies on 2 PCs which are both used by you only, and never at the same time)?

I'm always surprised that Mac OS X doesn't have any anti-piracy features, like product keys, activation or checking upon updating like Windows has and increases with every version (starting with product keys in Windows 95) - do Apple just care less about piracy than Microsoft, or is it that Mac users tend to want to support Apple more than Windows users want to support MS, so there is much less of a piracy problem?
