Wow, effortless FTP file transfer in Win XP!

Postby kesafloyd » Mon Aug 02, 2004 6:45 pm

I just found a way to transfer files between my PC and my "Mac" effortlessly via FTP . Maybe it will work for you too. I don't know if I can offer any help if it doesn't work, but here's what I did.

I have:
1. Win XP
2. OS X 10.3
3. PPC 0.3pre
4. Internet connection through TAP-Win32 Adapter connection and Analog X Proxy

I did:
1. In OS X, go to System Preferences>Internet & Network>Sharing
2. Under the "Services" tab, enable FTP Access
3. Note the FTP server address it tells you that others can now connect to your computer through
4. In Windows, go to "My Network Places"
5. Click on "Add a network place"
6. Choose the "Choose another network location" option in the wizard that comes up.
7. Enter the previously noted FTP server address into the "Internet or network address" box
8. Uncheck the "Log on anonymously" option in the next screen and in the user name box type your Mac user name (this can be found in System Preferences>System>Accounts)
9. Finish the wizard and drop the network place wherever (in your PPC folder, perhaps).
10. Connect and drag and drop files to and from your Mac HD!

For me, it works with the same speed as moving files around on my PC.

Even a simpler way

In OSX

Click the GO button then click connect to server..Then type smb:\192.168.0.1 or whatever is your TAP-Win32 IP Address..launch it and OSX will ask you for Windows logon (your username and password)..enter it and you will see your sharedocs or other shared floders in your Mac.its even simpler...

"smb:\192.168.0.1" is not correct, the "\" is wrong. The server address should be "smb:[b:d573b34967]//[/b:d573b34967]192.168.0.1"
But even with this correction I was still unable to connect because OSX told me my username and password were incorrect.

However, kesafloyd's method did work.

You can put image files in your 'SharedFolder' on WinXP

If you open that imagefile in OSX it will automaticly mounted as a new virtual drive!

Mac with Server 2003

Postby tonywob » Wed Sep 22, 2004 8:53 am

I can connect to my local desktop but not to our company's Windows Server.

When connecting to your local computer I didn't put in any domain or workgroup name and I connected as the administrator, and it worked fine. I had to share a folder to begin with.

I was, however, unable to connect to a domain controller using my Active Directory account since I believe Windows Server 2003 uses SMB signing, which Samba doesn't support. Correct me if I am wrong.

FTP also works brilliantly, you can even host a web-site on your Mac.
