Modern AMD chips will shutdown before they destroy themselves. I know this, because my chip was overheating once when I did some work to it, and somehow the CPU fan got unplugged, and it wasn't plugged back in.
Thus, my compi kept just shutting down, and I didn't quite know why. Until I found the plug for the CPU fan dangling.
All in all, the smoking AMD video from TomsHardware may have been sweet cool and awesome. AMD I think took the publicity to heart that their processors would rather kill themselves than give any worse performance.
