My thoughts on Vista...

Postby Alex » Mon Jun 12, 2006 6:02 pm

I found out on Sunday morning that both Vista and Office 2007 Beta 2 are available from Microsoft as a free download under their Community testing thing. I downloaded them, and so far I've tried Vista. I'm not exactly impressed... It may be my lousy 700Mhz Pentium 3 that's causing this, but I get an unbelievable number of BSODs while using it - most of the time when I switch windows with the taskbar. Other than that, it seems to be OK, although a little sluggish during bootup. The installer has definitely been improved since XP - it is much more user friendly. I do think that the user interface looks rather nice. I'll be posting more about Office 2007 sometime soon.

You need to remember that it is a Beta build, and that your system is under the recommended minimum.

Sometimes when you do want to run Vista, you have to be like XP and compare performance vs. appearance, espeically on processors that low; the ones even lower should be history.

And of course, if you have a 2GHz processor and wanted to run Vista as a virtual machine, I wonder if the CPU ratio would still hang between 0.45 and 0.6? I also wonder if that would be good enough for fair play between XP and vista on the same computer to say the least? I know Vista is more, so it needs the best processor it can rush a lot of data through.

Vista Beta 2 is currently my only installed OS and I'm really glad with it. There are hardly any BSODs, to be honest there were only some, when the drivers weren't installed. The installer is very easy to use but it misses two features, I think:

Customize: Because I don't want to install thinks like Teamwork...
Resize Partitions: Because it's useful.

PS: Oh, I forgot, the Media Center does NOT work for me.
The Goron Webserver

Your bottom smells! I got proofs.

Media Center works for me, but takes a few minutes to load up.

And yes, I agree with those points about the installer
