Got a New Mac

Postby zarusboy » Mon Apr 30, 2007 1:30 am

I finally got a mac its a powermac g4 sawtooth 512mb of memory 1 40gb and 1 120gb hard drive. I was celebrating until it came time to set it up. I got all my drives in a such and i put the mac os 10.4 disc in and help down C upon boot, however it came up with a folder and a question mark, so i tried the os 9 disc,no luck so i just kept trying and eventually got 9 to work. However I want 10 and when i try to upgrade it says this disc cannot be used as boot, also whenever i turn on or restart the machine it ejects the drive try this is INCREDIBLY annoying is there a way to fix this?

Nvm I got the problems sorted out it needed a new keyboard. Also I eventually managed to get mac os x on it. I actually modded the graphics card from my old pc machine to run on mac
so now instead of 16mb of vram it has a 128mb nvidia geforce fx 5200. Not to shabby eh?

Wow!!, so the old keyboard stopped OS X from installing and ejecting the drives!?

What did you have to do to mod the video card? Wish I could do that on my iBook Smile

At this time, it's better to have an Intel Mac from an apple store.

Yeah an Intel Mac would be nice but they can't (natively) boot into OS9. But seriously, PPC Macs are better than *no* macs Smile

Has anyone here got an Intel Mac emulating OS <=9.0.4 SheepShaver on it ?
Is the emulation worth it ? I don't get the point emulating an "old" OS9" OS on OSX, as it already have a 9.2.2 OS9, and can, with Rosetta, run 680x0 apps...

OS X 86 doesn't come with OS 9.2.2 and it can't be installed either. Rosetta only runs PPC OS X apps but you can run BasiliskII and minivmac for 68k apps...

Oh! I didn't know OSX86 don't come with OS9, neither Rosetta don't emulate 680x0 apps... Now, I know the reason of installing OS9 680x0 emulators on OSX Smile Thanks

I guess new was a bad choice of words Embarassed But I got it for free since one of my friends gave it to me so I didnt waste that much money. Reflashing the graphics card is somewhat weird since you have to boot from a floppy in your pc the app I used was nvflash and I "updated" it with a mac rom

The highest version of Mac OS that SS can run is 9.0.4 which is completely different in versions that 9.2. There was a screenshot emulating Mac OS 9 in SS using a Mac OS X version. It was Tiger, I think. Whatever you do, you do not want to run Sheepshaver within Mac OS X being emulated in PearPC. It can freeze and you will fail everytime. Trust me.
